Day 15- Greek Milk
My fingers are still readjusting from the Turkish keyboards-their I's are different and there are about 5 vital keys in different places.
We had a great trip to Samos island, the first of our two Greek Islands. Hannah and I climbed to the top of a huge hill/small mountain by chance ("hey let's climb these stairs, and these, and this dirt road..."you get the picture). I took lots of pics, but internet is pricey (2 euro=1/2 hr) so maybe later.
We spent the day in Samos then took the ferry to Mykonos Island. We arrived at 11pm and luckily had already booked our "beach cabin." Talk about jail cells- this room couldn't have been more than a 7 foot cube. But we made due, and realized there will probably be worse (at least this was private not dorm style). We hit the hay, even amid the blaring-till-6am music because we were so tired from travelling.
Next day was fun in Mykonos, but not quite as awe-inspiring. Its a lot rockier here (Samos is more lush-think cyprus and banana trees.) It is supposed to have a great night scene, but we decided not to spend (probably waste) our money on night clubs with rainbows all over them and names like "Ramrod." You get the picture. Overall, it was slightly disappointing and I wouldn't necessarily recommend this island, but we did have a good time wandering through chalk-white cube shaped buildings in tiny alleyways, all overlooking beautiful blue-green water (which was sadly very polluted with litter).
Instead, we sat on the beach at our "resort" -Paradise beach- that night and drank horribly cheap white Grecian wine over some words.
This morning we woke up and hit the same (nude) beach at our resort and then showered, checked out by noon, went into town and caught the ferry by 2:30 to Athens.
We arrived in Athens a lot faster than we expected (around 8:30) and 3 guys from a small area on the Spanish/French boarder called Basque Country, namely San Sebastian had been to Athens earlier in their trip and helped us find our way on the metro. From the metro we had a 10 min walk with our huge backpacks through little candle lit cafes and shops to our hostel. We checked in to a 10 bed mixed gender dorm room for 14 euro a night. not bad. Then we set our to explore a little bit. We bought ourselves some gelato/ice cream for 2.50 (we only spent 24 euro today including hostel) and walked up the sidewalk to a little cafe. A typical old Greek man offered to have us sit down and gave us free Ouzo (which he called "greek milk"-sweeter than Turkey's Reki) at the cafe, which is a really great sales tactic because when we left, we said thank you and he said "see you tomorrow," and chances are we will end up eating there tomorrow night. A treat for all of the PB and J we've been consuming on take-away table bread.
Athens has made a very good first impression and we're excited about tomorrow.
